Reflecting and Finding Clarity

Sometimes it’s only when we pause and truly reflect on an idea or concept that something inside us begins to shift. Thoughtful consideration brings clarity, and that clarity can open doors to deeper understanding.

Influences and Inspirations

The other night, I joined a Webinar titled Life as a Creative Process—an engaging dialogue between Philosopher Alex Carter and Psychotherapist/Stage Theatre Director Ben Yalom. I’ve followed Ben Yalom and his Father, Irvin Yalom, a now-retired psychologist from the States, after reading A Matter of Life and Death: Life, Love and What Matters, and Staring at the Sun, which explores finding peace with our own mortality. These works have had a profound influence on my thinking.

Family and Perspectives on Mortality

My family’s relationship with ageing and mortality is varied. My Grandfather lived to the age of ninety-six, surviving much, but toward the end he was weary—’wearing the same t-shirt’, as he put it, ready to say farewell after seeing it all. In contrast, my paternal grandmother and grandfather passed away comparatively young, at sixty-two and seventy. These experiences have shaped my fascination with how we face the reality of death.

Understanding Life and Death

Reflecting on these experiences led me to consider how our outlook shapes our journey through life and death. No matter who we are, where we’re from, or where we sit in society, life and death are processes we all follow. Some people find the knowledge of mortality overwhelming or traumatic, while others are able to accept it with a sense of peace.

For the past few months, every Tuesday evening I’ve been volunteering at a hospice. This work has been humbling. Sitting with people who know they are nearing the end of their journey—some imminently—has taught me that everyone’s experience is unique. When illness draws a patient towards hospice care, they often become more candid about their situation. Their openness and willingness to share can be difficult to hear, but it’s also incredibly meaningful.

The dedication and compassion of the nurses caring for these patients is something I truly admire. They give their attention selflessly, and seeing this inspires me to approach others with the same empathy and respect.

Being a Fellow Traveller

As you read this, you might be wondering whether I’m the right person for you. You might want to feel comfortable, respected, at ease and heard—all of which I promise to honour. We are all ‘Fellow Travellers’ in this world. When you come to see me, you’ll begin to understand how your own mind works and discover your own route to your own solutions. As your fellow traveller, I certainly don’t have everything figured out, and I’m far from perfect. So please know that you can come and be heard without judgment. My commitment is to listen and support you openly and empathetically.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy

Solution focused hypnotherapy combines an understanding of how we function from a neuroscientific perspective with the benefits of hypnosis. This powerful mix helps us re-wire our brains for our own good. Sometimes, we need to view ourselves from another angle to discover our ‘future possible selves’—the versions of ourselves we might become. For example, imagining yourself confidently navigating a new challenge can help you move toward that reality, as your mindset and actions shift to support growth.

Life as a Creative Practice

Life as a creative practice is an idea that deeply resonates with me. It means embracing change, viewing ourselves from different perspectives, and using creativity to get the best out of ourselves. Just as an artist might approach a canvas from a new angle to spark inspiration, we can approach our lives with fresh thinking to initiate positive change. Whether it’s trying a new approach to a problem or envisioning a brighter future, creative practice empowers us to shape our own journey.

Living Authentically

My own personal mantra is: ‘Life is not a dress rehearsal.’ This reminds me to live fully and authentically each day.

If you’re ready, let me help you paint the next picture—your next chapter—together.
